The history of the United States Coast Guard
goes back to 1790, when it was originally constituted to enforce
tariff and trade laws, prevent smuggling and protect collection
of revenue. Later on its’ duties grew to include mariners
in distress, protection of marine environment and chart the country’s
coastlines. The United States Coast Guard is
now dedicated to saving life at sea and enforcing the nation's
maritime laws. In times of war the coast guard serves under the
navy department on the direction of the president of the United
States.
The Reserve Officer Training Corps, or ROTC is one of the methods
of recruiting into the US
military offered by the U. S. army, the US
airforce, the united
states marines and the navy. In
fact it is offered by all the streams except for the United States
Coast Guard. The ROTC trains young graduates to go on to become
officers. The ROTC is available in over 1,000 colleges and universities
throughout the U.S., both those that host ROTC units or detachments
and those with cross-enrollment agreements with them. During college,
students take a full course load. However, the curriculum includes
military science courses that give the specialized knowledge needed
as an Officer.
Whether it is the United
States marines or the United States Coast Guard
or any branch of the military,
each offers some form of scholarship. What is common to all however
is the Montgomery GI Bill, thru which you can qualify for financial
assistance for college at any two or four-year College, vocational
school, or correspondence course. You may get a full scholarship
thru college, this would include tuition, course material such
as book and even boarding, and this requires a commitment of serve
as an officer for a minimum of three years after graduation. There
are also the little known college fund programs and enlisted persons
who qualify for these programs may receive up to $50,000 toward
college tuition, when combined with the Montgomery G.I. Bill,
and upon honorable discharge. Enlistees who are awarded the College
Fund by the United States Marines or United States Coast Guard
receive additional dollars that can make up a significant part
or all of the funds required for a college education.
There are aviation jobs available for
persons in each of the branches of the military and not just the
U. S. Air Force. Pilots in all
these branches are of various types; airlift pilot, bomber pilot,
fighter pilot, tanker pilot, etc. Officers are trained for aeronautical
specialties and even to become astronauts. The
U. S. Air Force and the other branches also employ navigators
who assist and direct pilots, conduct fuel consumption projections
etc.
